In this series, APA Style experts share methods with instructors for teaching APA Style guidance inside and outside the classroom.

Instructors, these posts will include quick lesson plans to supplement your curriculum. You may revise these lessons as needed.

This week’s topic is how to help students develop their knowledge of how journal articles work and why academic writers frequently use them.

Instructors, the Research Article Activity (PDF, 105KB)opens in new window and Anatomy of a Journal Article (PDF, 227KB)opens in new window are excellent resources to teach students how journal articles are organized and how to extract information from these article types quickly so they can apply it to their own research.

This is an activity that can be conducted in the classroom, the library, or another appropriate place. You can also assign this as a short-term homework assignment (i.e., it’s due the next class period) or as a long-term homework assignment (i.e., students work on it weekly and do not have to report their progress on it until several weeks later).

If your students completed the Tip 4 activity, use one of the articles they found for that activity. If not, ask students to find a new research article; moreover, the first part of the Research Article Activity provides you and your students with tips for where to find reliable sources.
